Facebook has started testing a new feature “Neighborhoods” that can able to connect people who live in the same neighborhood. This feature has similar to the ultra-local community platform Nextdoor.
Neighborhoods will connect with your nearby residents. After entering the location, you will be able to view the groups and posts created by your neighbors and browse the market items for sale in the community. Navarra pointed out: “You can switch communities or leave the current community at any time.”
Facebook can also let you create a separate profile specifically for your neighborhood. You can even add your hobbies and favorite places to your profile to help you connect with like-minded neighbors. Anyone near you can see your profile and vice versa. This way, you don’t have to be Facebook friends with your neighbors to interact with them.
However, if you are not satisfied with this, you can adjust your privacy. Navarra also mentioned that Facebook may use your location to show your hyper-local ads.
When using neighborhoods, Facebook’s community standards will still apply. When joining a neighbor for the first time, the screenshot shows that Facebook encourages you to “save any comments that are not directly related to your neighbor to other parts of Facebook.”
In other words, “Neighbors” got obvious inspiration from the local social network Nextdoor. Nextdoor also provides you with the opportunity to connect with your neighbors.
