Thin and lightweight sunglasses-like VR display prototype has been presented by Facebook’s Reality Labs as a concept validation.
Generally, VR headsets are heavy and maybe a bit too bulky for users thus its market is quiet as not many consumers are attracted. Due to these issues, Facebook came out with one solution which is the “Half Dome” VR headset last year. This headset is smaller as the optical path is folded into a very small space. Its size successfully achieved significant reductions as at the same time, 64 discrete focus planes are cycled through electronically controlled lenses array.
Facebook’s Reality Labs (formerly Oculus Research) are now presenting a more enhancing concept validation VR headset with an unique appearance which appears similar to common sunglasses.
Display Design
– < 9mm thick
– Oculus Quest weighs 571g
– Prototype reportedly weighs < 18g
– Compacted through a technique “Holographic Optics for Thin and Lightweight Virtual Reality”
Most VR displays
– Simple reflective lens (thick, curved piece of glass/ plastic)
Facebook high performance VR headset
– Holographic optics (bending light like a lens but looks like a thin sticker- like film)
Researchers then said that the “limit of human vision” can be resolved by its visible pixels eliminated with a huge potential for wider color range which delivers a visual upgrade.
The Siggraph paper 2020 not only described the technique used in the current displays but also mentioned that there still exist issues, for instance, laser speckle and ghost images and also systems integration as future challenges.
