Are You on 5G Yet?
The availability of 5G in Malaysia varies depending on your location and your choice of telecommunication provider. Only seven million of the country’s 45 million mobile consumers have 5G-ready handsets, according to Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
According to Fahmi, however, only roughly 2.49 million customers have made the switch to 5G, revealing a substantial disparity between the number of Malaysians capable of accessing the network and those who do.
This is despite the fact that the country has achieved 70.2% 5G coverage of populated areas (COPA).
Fahmi stated the government has been in conversation with telco operators to address the issue of the 5G fee, with a suggestion to mimic the transition to 4G, which did not impose a fee, back in 2013.
“The issue is being discussed with the relevant mobile network operators (MNOs) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).”
“The request is for MNOs not to impose additional charges to take up 5G, just as we migrated to 4G – which we started using without having to opt in,” he stated in a news release. The ministry also suggests that instead of needing to opt in to the network, consumers be given the option to check out.
